The webinar features an in-depth panel discussion with eSafety, Communications Alliance, Our Watch and Aussie Broadband, and a special address from investigative journalist Jess Hill (author of ‘See What You Made Me Do’ book and SBS series).

The conversation includes an overview of domestic and family violence (DFV) and coercive control, before discussing the relevance of DFV to the telco industry and some of the challenges.

It also describes what the industry is doing to support victim/survivors and ultimately reduce instances.

Meet Jess.

Jess Hill is an investigative journalist who has been writing about domestic violence since 2014. In April 2020 Jess won the Stella Prize for her non-fiction work See What You Made Me Do: Power, Control and Domestic Abuse, the product of a four-year investigation into domestic abuse. This was followed by a three-part SBS documentary series, of the same title, hosted by Jess.

Her reporting on domestic violence has also won two Walkley awards, an Amnesty International award and three Our Watch awards.

Prior to this work, Jess was a producer for ABC Radio, a Middle East correspondent for The Global Mail, and an investigative journalist for Background Briefing. She has been listed in Foreign Policy’s top 100 Women to follow on Twitter.

Meet Rebecca.

Rebecca Razavi is General Manager & Chief Operating Officer at Australia’s eSafety Commission, the world’s first online safety regulator. Rebecca has extensive management and strategic policy experience with a 20-year career in public and private sector leadership roles that has taken her to Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia and included more than a decade in senior diplomatic roles.

Prior to her current role, Rebecca was Executive Director at NSW Treasury leading the design and development of the NSW Government’s Industry, Trade and Investment Strategy and leading the Government’s innovation programs. Between 2015 and 2018 she was Executive Director at Ernst & Young in South East Asia, establishing a practice focused on sustainability, corporate reporting, green finance and clean tech. Her leadership roles in the UK’s Foreign Office and Home Office include positions as Charge d’Affairs, Deputy Ambassador and Consul General to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Deputy Ambassador and Consul General to Sudan, and policy and operational roles providing oversight of trade, privacy, counter-terrorism, immigration and transnational crime issues, including negotiation and design of EU regulation and international cooperation mechanisms.

Rebecca holds an Executive MBA from the University of Oxford and is also an alumnus of the University of New South Wales with bachelor degrees in Environmental Science (Hons) and International Relations.

Meet John.

John Stanton is a seasoned communications industry executive with over 18 years of experience. John became Chief Executive Officer of Communications Alliance Ltd in 2010 following three years as Chief Executive Officer of ASX and NZX-listed telecommunications carrier, People Telecom. Prior to that, John was an executive with Intelsat, the largest provider of fixed satellite services worldwide.

Based in the UK from 2001-2005, he was President and Director of Intelsat Global Sales & Marketing and of the Data, Carrier and Internet Business Unit. He also spent two years in the US with Intelsat as Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

John has also held a number of roles at Telstra, including Managing Director of Payphones and Card Services.

Meet Janet.

As Former General Manager of Corporate Affairs and a member of Aussie Broadband’s senior leadership team, Janet has led the company’s diversity strategy and stance on social responsibility for the past four years. In 2020 Janet received the ‘Diversity Initiative’ award, part of the CISCO Women in IT Awards.

Janet is a passionate advocate of inclusion and is founder and executive sponsor of Aussie Broadband’s corporate giving, wellbeing, diversity and inclusion and LGBTI network groups. In addition to her five years experience in the telco industry, Janet held senior positions for eight years in the water industry.

As a TTF member, Aussie Broadband is an active participant in the Foundation’s Industry Impact Hub’s DFV Roundtable.

Our Watch

Meet Cara.

Cara is the newly appointed Director of Prevention in Action at Our Watch, a national leader for the prevention of violence against women. In this senior role Cara works to increase the skill, number, diversity, and coordination of people working to change culture – to reduce instances of domestic and family violence.

She works across diverse organisations and sectors.
Cara brings nearly 15 years of leadership in preventing violence against women, gender equality, women’s rights, and security in Australia and internationally.

Cara has previously worked at VicHealth and the Australian Government Office for Women and at Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in Geneva. Cara has completed a Master of Public Policy and management.
